ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES
Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to at-risk, homeless, and street-involved youth under 25. Vancouver’s most vulnerable youth can connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs several facilities and programs for youth throughout Vancouver.
Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing all kinds of life’s challenges.
HERES WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER
The Directions Youth Worker – Dusk to Dawn position is a salaried part-time role that serves homeless, street-involved youth under the age of 24 accessing the 24-hour Directions Youth Services Centre. This position takes a leadership role in tone-setting and maintaining the safety of the resource. This position provides guidance and information to the youth promoting safety and, where possible, assisting in their transition from the street to healthier, alternative lifestyles. This position acts in a mentoring role with Peer Support Workers. This position reports to the Dusk to Dawn Supervisors and/or Manager of Directions Youth Services Centre.
Hours of work: 28 hours per week -Thursday – Sunday, 3:45pm-11:45pm
YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
- Intake and assessment of new clients’ access, pre-screening, and determining if they are an appropriate fit for the program, and making referrals when required.
- Identify individual needs for youth accessing the centre and provide support, encouragement, collaboration and education to clients in matters related to crisis intervention, harm reduction, conflict resolution, community resources, alcohol and drug information, and advocacy to clients and referral calls utilizing youth social work best practice.
- Initiate MCFD involvement where appropriate to develop and support Integrated Case Management strategies.
- Maintain appropriate notes, statistics, logs and critical incidents in a professional and thorough manner in the online database where applicable.
- Ensure adherence to all program and agency policies, procedures, safety standards, and accreditation standards including the Centre’s Facility Management Plan.
- Take a leadership role in the management of emergency and crisis situations by personally employing non-violent crisis prevention and intervention strategies, initiating first aid, calling emergency services, and/or delegating these tasks.
- Ensure the highest professional standards of ethics and confidentiality.
- Perform clerical duties as required such as answering phones, filing, sorting, and indexing.
- Attendance at and participation in regular supervision meetings, team meetings, site meetings, case management meetings, etc.
- General cleaning and upkeep of the centre.
- Maintain certification in training required by the program.
- Offer “leadership supports” to Peer Support Workers.
- Work closely and collaboratively with all FSGV Youth Services, other community agencies, and government ministries as appropriate in the development of youth case management.
- Assist youth in accessing community support by advocating for services; escorting, and transporting clients to outside service referral locations, as appropriate.
- Participate in training practicum students and trainees in a job shadow model.
– Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
– Experience assisting at-risk youth in crisis.
WHAT YOU BRING
Education and training:
- Two years post-secondary course/diploma in social work or youth care/certificate in related field
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training an asset
- Food Safe Certification an asset
- Minimum 2 years experience working with youth, preferably in support of youth who have alcohol/drug misuse issues.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
- Knowledge of community, social and health resources
- Knowledge of the systemic issues that affect low income and marginalized people
- Knowledge of substance misuse, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioral management
- Basic knowledge of mental health issues and treatment
- Ability to observe and recognize change in clients
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
- Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques
- Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory work relationships with the public and other employees to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and other agencies and to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and a part of a team
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse population
- Basic computer literacy
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
Working conditions: 24 hour crisis response program
- Ability to work evening shifts

Salary/Pay Grade: 7, Step 1 – $1,210.16 Bi-weekly (plus benefits after successfully passing probationary period)
