ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES
Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to at-risk, homeless, and street-involved youth under 25. Vancouver’s most vulnerable youth can connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs several facilities and programs for youth throughout Vancouver.
Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for 90 years has provided trauma counselling and essential resources for children, families and individuals facing all kinds of life’s challenges.
This entry level Youth Worker position focuses on creating and maintaining a safe, supportive and therapeutic living environment for detoxing youth. Youth Workers aid and manage the daily needs of the residents, the position will consist of working with a variety of youth residents struggling with addiction including those with intellectual, emotional/social challenges, dual diagnosis, and sexual abuse victims.
• Assessment and screening of referrals, non-standard hours admissions, including suicide risk assessment/safety plans and discharge of clients; completes all relevant documentation following standard procedure.
• Provides support, encouragement and education to clients in matters related to crisis intervention, harm reduction, conflict resolution, community resources, alcohol and drug information, and advocacy to clients and referral calls.
• Monitors youth in detox 24 hours per day, ensuring the safety and comfort of clients, by observing and documenting client behaviour, withdrawal symptoms/stressors/physical and emotional needs and informing counselling staff/supervisor as required.
• Attend medical assessments, advocating for client and communicating non-medical program model to physicians for clients requiring medical clearance or withdrawal management medication treatments, or medication approval. Follow standard procedures in ordering receiving and disposing of all medication, administrating all approved medication following established policy.
• Ensures maintenance of the facility and care of clients by performing household cleaning, yard work, and minor repairs. Preparation of meals, maintaining supply inventories, assisting with orders and shopping.
• Performs clerical duties as required such as answering phones, filing, sorting, and indexing Maintaining daily client logs, notes, documents, forms, reports, youth review and statistical information.
• Assist youth in accessing community support by supervising, escorting, and transporting clients to all outside appointments.
• 2 years post secondary course/diploma/certificate in social work or youth care or other related education, plus 2 years’ recent related experience Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
• Current First Aid certification is an asset.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Food Safe Certification is an asset.
• Knowledge of issues/needs of high risk and/or street-involved youth.
