LEGACY GIVING

YOUR LEGACY IS THEIR BRIGHTER TOMORROW.

You want to make a lasting difference for your community. Have you considered a gift in your Will?

What is legacy giving?

Legacy giving is including a charity, like Family Services of Greater Vancouver, as a beneficiary in your Will, life insurance policy, or endowment fund. Leaving a gift in your Will or life insurance has the power to change lives for generations to come.
More and more Canadians are leaving a gift in their Will to charity. With a legacy gift, ordinary people can use the power of their Wills to make a big difference in this world.

How can I benefit from legacy giving?

Legacy giving is a great way to

  1. Make a difference that’s important to you. You’ve always found ways to give back and legacy giving is a great way to do so without using any of the money you need now.
  2. Be tax savvy. Tax payables by your estate are reduced by almost 1/2 of the donation value, though the amount varies by province. This means that a gift of $100,000 will reduce tax payable by about $50,000.

Is legacy giving right for me?

Legacy giving is a highly effective way to give back. Leaving a gift in your Will or from your life insurance policy allows you to make a major contribution, without using any of the money you need now, and without disinheriting loved ones in the future. Even 1% of your estate gives us the chance to empower more people, nurture healthy families, and support the marginalized youth who depend on us.

What can be a legacy gift?

There are a few common ways to leave a legacy. You can choose whichever is right for you and the plans you have for the future.

  1. You can name Family Services of Greater Vancouver as the beneficiary in your Will. This can be for a specific gift such as cash, securities, RRSPs, property, or the residual of the estate after your loved ones are provided for.
  2. You can name Family Services of Greater Vancouver as the beneficiary in a new or existing life insurance policy.
  3. You can create an endowment fund named in honour of you, your family, or loved ones.

You have other options as well! We would be please to discuss these with you, to walk you through the options and steps you would take to ensure that you’re able to give back in a way that’s meaningful to you.
