CARING NEIGHBOURS – NEW WESTMINSTER
*Caring Neighbours 2018 Registration will open in the fall*
Help a family or senior in need this holiday season
Every holiday season brings for most of us an opportunity to gather with friends and family, celebrate and recognize how grateful we are for all we have, and to enjoy time to give and receive. But for many families and seniors in New Westminster, it can be a reminder of financial hardship, loneliness, and the challenges of meeting personal and family needs.
As a Caring Neighbour, you will get matched with a family or senior in New Westminster (where this program is run), go shopping for gifts, and deliver them to your family or senior in person. It’s a wonderfully rewarding program. You are invited to get your family, workplace, team or church involved!
Thanks to the help of all the Caring Neighbours during the 2017 holiday season, a record 196 families and seniors were matched or received gift cards.
Registration for the 2018 Caring Neighbours holiday season opens in the fall. In the meantime, you can still help by making a donation of money or gift certificates directly to the Caring Neighbours Program and our volunteers will see to the rest. Any amount, big or small, will help to support families and seniors in New Westminster.
Tax receipts are automatically issued for cash donations of $20 and above. Tax receipts for donated gift cards can also be issued, but CRA requires that the original store transaction receipt MUST be provided.
How it works
Tell us the size of the family you would like to be connected with, or whether you would prefer to be connected with a senior, and we will match you as closely as possible.
Once we have matched you with a family or senior, we will provide you with the information you need about each person in the family—ages of children, gender, clothing size, hobbies and wish lists.
You can purchase the gifts, groceries, or gift cards (which are ideal, because they give families the flexibility to create the type of Christmas they want for their family). Wrap the presents and personally deliver everything to the family’s home by the deadline in December.
How much should I budget?
We recommend budgeting $100-$120 for each person in the family. Of that, we suggest half (approximately $50 or $60) should be allocated to gifts for each child or senior and the remaining for food.
