Internship opportunities
Applications for our September 2026 cohort are now closed
The Trauma Counselling Graduate Internship Program is for folks completing a graduate degree (Masters) in counselling or social work. Designed to support interns in their personal and professional growth, participants will refine their counselling skills, develop new skills, and nurture the development of “self” as therapist.
Our Internship Supervisors have diverse training, skills, and expertise in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing, arts-based approaches, Internal Family Systems, Play Therapy, and EMDR. We approach counselling from a trauma-informed, feminist, intersectional, anti-oppressive lens. We believe that work with clients is relational, that clients are the experts of their own lives and lived experiences, and we are here to walk alongside our clients as they move towards a greater sense of well-being. We offer a workplace culture of respectful consultation and mutual support.
Internship details:
- 10-month program, September to June
- Combination of virtual and in-person work with clients
- Client trauma histories may include childhood sexual abuse, gender-based violence, and/or violence in their families of origin
- Previous counselling experience is preferred (play, expressive arts, or somatic training or trauma-specific training)
- Interns are expected to work 2 days a week and to see 8 clients per week
- Workdays will vary depending on the program and supervisor’s availability
- Interns receive 1.5 hours of individual clinical supervision per week
- Interns receive 2 hours of group supervision/peer consultation per month
- Additional in-house training is available
- FSGV offers some group counselling hours, but it may not be enough to fulfill every Masters program requirement
We are not accepting applications at this time.
The DYS Internship Program provides an exciting opportunity for students to learn on the job and hone their skills. Placements most often support students who are studying social work degrees or Child and Youth Worker diplomas. We are proud to have have accepted students from UBC, UVic, Douglas College, Langara College, and Sprott Shaw College. Don’t see your school on the list? We are always open to new partnerships.
At Directions Youth Services, we approach service delivery from a youth- and trauma-informed lens. We believe that clients are the experts of their own lives and lived experiences, and we are here to walk alongside youth as they figure out what’s next in their lives. We offer a workplace culture of respectful consultation and mutual support.
