What: Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is commemorating Homelessness Action Week (October 14-18) through the campaign “Opening Doors with Entry Point Programs”, which encourages the public to donate their time or funds to help homeless youth. Providing a bridge to FSGV’s Directions Youth Services, entry point programs such as the Food Program and 2SLGBTQIA+ Program play a pivotal role in helping young people access nutritious meals, shelter, health supports, and other necessary services.
Why: FSGV serves some of the region’s most vulnerable young people, many of whom are unhoused or precariously housed, have been abused or neglected, or struggle with addiction. At Directions, FSGV meets youth in crisis where they are at to get them what they need, so they can get to where they want to be. When youth in crisis come to Directions Youth Services for food or shelter, FSGV takes the opportunity to build a relationship, gain trust, and empower them to begin building the lives they want.
For over three decades, Directions Youth Services has made a notable impact in the lives of young people across the Lower Mainland. Here’s a snapshot of FSGV’s impact from 2023:
- In 2023, FSGV served over 39,000 free meals and snacks to vulnerable youth.
- More than 1,000 youth have utilized Directions Youth Services, often through entry point programs.
- More than 14,000 referrals were made to Directions Youth Services clients.
- At least 25% of youth using FSGV’s programs identified as queer or trans.
When: Throughout the month of October, FSGV invites the community to open doors to young people in the Lower Mainland by donating to, or volunteering with, Directions Youth Services, the Food Program, or the 2SLGBTQIA+ Program.
How: There are many ways the community can support FSGV:
- Donate online
- Engage your community or team in corporate giving
- Volunteer at Directions Youth Services
