A Volunteer’s Story: Meet Shimna

Published: April 23, 2025

We’re excited to introduce Shimna, a dedicated member of our Community Kitchens who has not only been an active participant but is now taking the next step to be a volunteer. Shimna’s journey with us has been a true reflection of the spirit of community and giving back. Her passion for helping others, combined with her warm and approachable nature, has made her a beloved presence in our kitchens. We’re thrilled to see her taking on this new role, and we know her contribution will continue to inspire and uplift our community.

Q: How did you first hear about our Community Kitchen program, and what activities or tasks do you enjoy the most?

A: I first learned about the Community Kitchen Program through SWIS. In the summer of 2022, I joined the program with my kids, and it was such a great experience that I became a regular participant whenever I could. I really enjoy the sense of community while cooking together and love learning new recipes. I also find the informative workshops held throughout the program to be valuable and insightful.

Q: Are there any stories or moments that stand out to you from your time in the program?

A: One moment that stood out for me was when we made ground beef wellington for the first time. It was such a fun and collaborative experience and working together really made it special. Another memorable experience was during one of the workshops when dietitian Yolanda gave a presentation, and we prepared a healthy and easy recipe for holiday granola. Beyond cooking, the program has also deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity and inclusion within our community.

Q: How do you think the Community Kitchen has shaped your relationship with food, others, or your sense of community?

A: The Community Kitchen has deepened my relationship with food by helping me appreciate the cultural significance of dishes and encouraging healthier, more balanced meals for my family. It has also allowed me to connect with others, fostering teamwork and forming bonds through shared cooking experiences. Most importantly, the program has strengthened my sense of community by promoting collaboration, learning, and mutual support, while deepening my appreciation for the diverse backgrounds that make our community unique.

Thank you to Shimna for being part of our Community Kitchen program!
